Women of my generation who came of age before women's liberation didn't think of ourselves as equal to men. Now women do. Sometimes it seems like women of today forget what it used to be like. Many things were unthinkable, like having a say in the way things went in your life, or even the ability to control or change your life. The man was in charge. No matter how hard it is to balance work and family or to stay married in today's world, there is no doubt that things are much better for women than they were before. My granddaughters started playing soccer at the age of four. In my day and in my daughter's day, girls didn't play soccer. The trick, though, is to make the most of all of these new opportunities, which is more dizzying and harder in some ways than staying on a prescribed path.
