Eating meals together is something I believe in also, but my wife likes to eat standing up in the kitchen, while I'm with the kids in the dining room. I did that in college, but it seems inappropriate now. I don't think it's cultural, it's just that she's not hungry or tired of being with the kids all day. Fortunately, the kitchen is within earshot of the dining room, so arguably it still counts as family time.
